A word from ART DEPT
Le Corbusier believed that space and light are things that one needs just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep.
They are essentials for wellbeing as relevant today as the day he proclaimed them. And what lies at the heart of motivation for architects, designers and artists in our current global climate? Practicality, sustainability and futurism. These notions run through this year’s festival curation, championing those from iconic masters to rule breakers. Curated into four categories – the iconoclastic, design radicals, a feminine vision and green-minded – we’re excited to announce a full-bodied lineup of incredibly engaging feature-length and short documentary films chosen from all over the globe.
And to launch the festival, we are proud to announce the world premiere screening of Maurice & I, a local documentary celebrating the architectural partnership of Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney and their resulting legacy. This year also includes the festival’s first film in Te Reo Māori, Tūhononga. Directed by local filmmaker Miriama Toms, this short documentary presents a new type of co-occupancy with architecture grounded in Tikanga Māori that considers spiritual, spatial and physical interactions, re-imagining communities to co-exist with Ranginui (the Sky Father) and Papatūānuku (the Earth Mother).
Each film explores stories that tell us about ourselves, revealing moments that have shaped our history and give glimpses as to where our innovations might lead us. From retrospections into modern history to explorations of progressive technologies, we’re confident that the curation offers a comprehensive selection of films to entertain, educate, inspire, provoke thought and encourage critical thinking.

If it is one thing we have learned over all the years of creating and making paints and products, inspiration can, and does, come from anywhere and everywhere. Every new day, every conversation, every project, every product brings with it learnings and insights that can be taken forward to improve and evolve. And so too with this Resene Architecture and Design Film Festival. Each film is inspirational and thought provoking, a chance to be immersed in the world of design and the infinite possibilities available to us all. It’s just the booster shot we all need to spark ideas.
Architects and designers have a wonderful way of rising to challenges and going far beyond them to deliver ideas and solutions that are so much more than was originally envisaged. Teamed with the passion of skilled tradespeople and passionate product makers, that vision becomes reality as a physical and tangible addition to our streetscapes and landscapes.
New Zealand’s creative community constantly keeps us on our toes, sparking new products, new colours, new services and new ways of doing things. So many of our products and colours have been born or evolved out of these creative challenges. Since our very humble beginnings in a Wellington garage 78 years ago with paint made in a concrete mixer, our passion for paint, colour and creativity has continued to grow. This festival allows us to share a treasure trove of inspiration with all of you who inspire us.
Thanks to Rialto Cinemas, the Resene Architecture and Design Film Festival continues to go from strength to strength too and is now one of the largest architecture and design film festivals in the world. It has been 13 years since the very first Resene Architecture & Design Film Festival and we thank you all for your ongoing support of this festival and Resene that makes this festival possible.
We are excited to share this latest film festival with you and hope you enjoy the films as much as we do.
– Nick Nightingale
Managing Director, Resene
Rialto Cinemas is proud to partner with the creative agency ART DEPT for the third consecutive year to present the 13th edition of the Resene Architecture & Design Film Festival.
Together, we have surveyed and selected from the latest and most captivating architecture and design documentary films to build an intriguing lineup for you to enjoy.
We’re launching this year’s film festival at the Christchurch Town Hall on Wednesday 1 May with the world premiere of Maurice & I, Rick Harvie and Jane Mahoney’s feature-length film commemorating the remarkable architectural feats of Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney. We are honoured to invite supporters of the festival and the Ōtautahi Christchurch community to celebrate these Cantabrian revolutionaries in the Christchurch Town Hall, the building considered by many as their finest work. This occasion will offer a firsthand immersive experience of one of Ōtautahi Christchurch’s most iconic buildings and a moment to remember and reflect on the Ōtautahi Christchurch earthquakes 13 years on.
This year’s film categories are comprised of 18 features and six shorts, each providing an exchange of ideas that can’t be missed. It’s wonderful to have festival-favourite filmmaker Jake Gorst (Frey: Part I – The Architectural Envoy, RADFF 2021; Desert Utopia, RADFF 2014) back on our screens with his new film New England Modernism: Revolutionary Architecture in the 20th Century. Other featured films include Point of Origin which documents the design and construction of one of Rem Koolhaas’ smallest but most challenging commissions; Green Over Gray is a panorama of the visionary ‘green architect’ Emilio Ambasz and Fashion Reimagined charts a trailblazing fashion designer on a mission to create a sustainable collection from field to finished garment.
We’d like to thank our sponsors for making this festival possible. A special thanks to Resene – our long-standing naming rights sponsor – for their support and commitment to the festival. Our gold sponsors: Fisher & Paykel, Colorsteel, Inzide, Blum, Home Magazine and Go Media. Our Bronze sponsor: ADNZ (Architectural Designers New Zealand) and our wine partner: Trinity Hill.
